Editable kit
A reference list template saves you from scrambling when an employer or agency asks for referees. This free kit helps you choose the right people, ask them politely, brief them on the job, and keep track of who has been contacted. It includes a referee list, three message templates, a briefing note and a thank-you note.
Why a prepared reference list helps
Reference checks often come late in the process, and a wrong number or a surprised referee can slow a job offer. Preparing in advance means you can type each name and contact detail correctly and tell your referees what to expect.
What the kit includes
- Choosing referees: a six-point checklist, plus suggestions if you have little work history.
- Referee list: space for three referees with relationship, dates, contact details and when you asked.
- Messages to copy and edit: one for a recent supervisor, one for someone you have not spoken to in a while, and a short text.
- Briefing note: the job, the main tasks, the skills they may be asked about, and how the reference will be collected.
- Thank-you note and tracker: who you asked, when they were contacted, and the outcome.
How to use it
Pick two or three people, send the request message, and fill in the referee list once they agree. Send each referee the briefing note whenever you apply for a job. Keep the list with your CV, and update it if details change.
If you are still building your application, use the free CV templates and the warehouse cover letter kit first.
References through Chandler Personnel
Chandler's candidate FAQ says reference checks are done online using the Righteo automated reference checking platform. You enter your referee's details online or on your phone, and your referee gets a simple way to submit the reference. Keep this kit open while you do it.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many referees do I need?
Two or three is usual. Check the job ad or ask the agency, because requirements vary.
Who makes a good referee?
Someone who supervised or worked closely with you and saw your work first-hand, such as a recent supervisor, team leader or site manager. Avoid family and friends unless a personal reference is requested.
What if I have no work references?
Use a trainer, teacher, coach, volunteer coordinator or anyone who has seen you do practical work. Tell the employer or agency honestly that your experience is limited.
Do I need to ask permission first?
Yes. Always ask before giving someone's details to an employer or agency. It is courteous, and it means they will take the call.
Should I put referees on my CV?
Many people write that references are available on request, then share the list when asked. That keeps referees' details off documents anyone can download.
