Heat risk is not limited to a forecast temperature. A loading dock, outdoor yard or hot production area can change over a shift. This free heat risk checklist helps a host supervisor assess the actual task and work area before the crew starts.

Check conditions, then choose controls

The five-part form captures environment, task intensity and clothing, followed by practical controls such as drinking water, cooler rest areas, ventilation and adjustments to pace, timing or rotation. Record what is available on your site and who will fix any gap. Safe Work Australia says working in heat can harm workers both indoors and outdoors.

Reassess when the shift changes

Brief the crew, including new and agency workers, and invite feedback. Record a later check when conditions or work change. The decision section offers proceed, delay, relocate or stop, plus conditions and approval for restart. In Victoria, host employers and labour hire providers must consult, cooperate and coordinate where they share OHS duties. A completed form does not replace a site-specific risk assessment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there one temperature at which work must stop?

This template does not set a universal threshold. Assess the work, conditions, people and effectiveness of controls under your site and jurisdictional process.

Who completes the pre-start?

A host supervisor should document the site check with input from workers and relevant provider contacts. Assign owners to unresolved controls.

What if a worker raises a concern mid-shift?

Escalate and reassess promptly. Follow the site emergency and incident procedures if needed; keep personal health details out of the shared form.

Does a ticked checklist make the shift safe?

No. Verify controls in practice, monitor changes and make a fresh stop or restart decision when conditions warrant.
