The Fonterra graduate program in Australia has three streams, Commercial, Supply Chain and Automation Engineering, each with its own page and its own preferred background. This guide walks through what each stream covers, who can apply, how to read the offices and plants the page lists, and which details to confirm before you send an application.

The official page is clear on streams and eligibility, but it gives two different program lengths and shows no intake year, so treat this guide as a map and the page as the final word. It is written for final-year students, recent graduates and the parents and advisers helping them decide. Chandler Personnel does not run, recruit for or place people into these graduate programs; apply on each employer's own page.

What the Fonterra Graduate Program Offers in Australia

Fonterra Australia is a dairy ingredients and foodservice business, part of a dairy co-operative, Fonterra Co-operative Group Limited. According to Fonterra's graduate page, the Australian head office is in Richmond, Melbourne.

The page describes an 18-month training plan with a company induction, a learning calendar and a tailored development plan, mentoring from senior management and coaching from rotation supervisors, and work on real projects. It also says graduates are hired into a permanent role within a function.

On who Fonterra wants, the main page says it is looking for passionate, innovative and collaborative graduates instead of specific degrees from particular disciplines. The stream pages are more specific, as the next section shows.

The Three Streams: Commercial, Supply Chain and Automation Engineering

Commercial stream

According to Fonterra's commercial stream, graduates build an understanding of the business through business partnering roles that support channels such as Sales, Milk Supply and Operations, and through central roles in Financial Control. The page asks for commercially minded people with studies in Commerce, Business and related fields. A graduate profile on the page describes rotations through Operations, Financial Control and Milk Supply.

Supply Chain stream

According to Fonterra's supply chain stream: "You do not need a specific qualification to apply for our Supply Chain stream, our graduates have studied a variety of fields." The page describes the person it wants as someone who enjoys strategic thinking, works through complex issues and is analytical with numbers. A graduate profile on the page mentions scheduling milk tankers in regional Victoria and building cost models, which is one graduate's account rather than a stated placement.

Automation Engineering stream

The Automation Engineering page says graduates rotate through different teams at different manufacturing sites, and that the role suits people interested in electrical and electronic control systems and logic such as PLCs, HMIs, VSDs and robotics, with strong logical thinking and good root cause analysis.

PLCs are the controllers that run automated machinery, HMIs are the operator screens and VSDs are the drives that control motor speed. The page for Fonterra's automation engineering stream names no degree, so check the current listing for any qualification requirement. For the employer side of the same skills, Chandler's guide to PLC engineers in food production covers how food plants hire for PLC and HMI work.

Who Can Apply: Study Stage, Credit Average and Residency

The main page lists three rules under "Who can apply?"

  • Study stage. Final year of undergraduate studies, or within two years after graduating.
  • Credit average. A credit average of 65 or higher.
  • Residency. Australian or NZ resident or citizen.

The page adds that graduates are hired into a permanent role. It refers to undergraduate studies and does not say whether postgraduates qualify, does not explain how the credit average is measured, and states no exceptions. If you finished your degree more than two years ago, the stated window would not cover you. Check the page for the current intake before you rely on these rules.

The page also points to a recruitment FAQ. That FAQ is Fonterra's general careers FAQ and covers all roles, so it does not replace the graduate page.

Offices and Plants on the Page, and Why That Is Not Graduate Placement

The page describes a head office in Richmond, Melbourne, eight manufacturing sites across Victoria and Tasmania, and sales offices in Sydney, Adelaide, Perth and Brisbane. These are facts about the company. The page does not say where graduates are placed, so do not assume a graduate role sits in any of those places.

If you are searching for Fonterra graduate jobs in Melbourne, Richmond is the Melbourne suburb named on the page, but nothing there says graduates sit in it. The Automation Engineering page says graduates rotate through teams at different manufacturing sites, and the Supply Chain page carries one graduate's account that mentions regional Victoria. Neither names where a new graduate will sit.

Separately from graduate hiring, Chandler Personnel, an independent Melbourne-based blue collar specialist, supplies labour hire and permanent recruitment for food manufacturing jobs and food production work. Our post on FMCG labour forecasting looks at how factories plan staffing for seasonal demand, which is a different question from the graduate roles described here.

What to Confirm: Program Length, Current Intake and the Recent Business Change

Fonterra's graduate page describes an 18-month program in its overview, while a graduate quote on the same page mentions rotating over a 2-year period, so confirm the current length on the page before you rely on either figure.

The page also shows no intake year, application window or closing date, so check the page for the current length and intake before you plan around any date.

A notice on the page says Fonterra's global Consumer and associated businesses, known as Mainland Dairy, moved to Lactalis, with the divestment finalised in Q1 2026. Read any consumer-brand wording on the page with that change in mind.

Before you apply, confirm these points on the current page:

  • Length. Whether the program is 18 months or two years.
  • Intake. Whether a current intake and application window are shown.
  • Eligibility. The study stage, credit average and residency rules above.
  • Stream. The stream page for your field: Commercial for Commerce and Business studies, Supply Chain (no specific qualification asked), Automation Engineering for control systems.

Programs, streams and dates change, so confirm each detail on the employer's own page before you apply.

Common Questions About the Fonterra Graduate Program

1. Which streams does the Fonterra graduate program offer?

Fonterra's graduate page lists three streams. Commercial covers business partnering and Financial Control, Supply Chain asks for no specific qualification, and Automation Engineering rotates graduates through manufacturing sites. Each stream has its own page, so read the one that matches your field.

2. Who can apply for the Fonterra graduate program?

According to the page, you can apply in the final year of an undergraduate degree or within two years after graduating, with a credit average of 65 or higher, as an Australian or NZ resident or citizen. Check the page for the current intake before you rely on these rules.

3. Do I need a specific degree for the Supply Chain stream?

No. The Supply Chain stream page says you do not need a specific qualification and that its graduates have studied a variety of fields. It describes the people it wants as strategic thinkers who are comfortable with numbers. The Commercial stream differs: it names Commerce, Business and related studies.

4. Where is the Fonterra graduate program based?

The page lists a head office in Richmond, Melbourne, eight manufacturing sites across Victoria and Tasmania, and sales offices in Sydney, Adelaide, Perth and Brisbane. It does not say where graduates sit, so confirm the location of any role on the current page before you plan a move.

5. How long is the Fonterra graduate program?

The page's overview describes an 18-month program, while one graduate quote mentions rotating over a 2-year period. Both figures appear on the same page, so confirm the current length there before you rely on either. Plan around the length shown on the current page, not the figures quoted here.

Confirm Fonterra's Length and Intake First

Fonterra's three streams are easy to tell apart, and the entry rules are short: a final-year or recent undergraduate, a credit average of 65 or higher, and Australian or NZ residency or citizenship. What the page leaves unclear is the program length, the intake and any application window. Read the stream page for your field, then check the length and intake on the graduate page before you apply.
